Ingredients for Successful Designs

Imagination

The most important ingredient. Think of it like a magic-eye puzzle - look at a map, let your eyes blur and see what comes up. If you see any distinctive shapes, attach it to an animal or object to draw.

A trackable map

A piece of paper with the route on it works, but it’s tough to read street names. Look for apps which allow for a breadcrumb trail. I use RideWithGPS which calls out my next turn and extra details, but any mapping program works.

An extra excuse to exercise

Do you find running or cycling on roads boring, but still want to do it? Same here. Do you want to make your preferred method more interesting? Drawing a shape fulfils both criteria.

Simple design methods

The designing aspect is half the fun, but don’t make it a chore. MS Paint and the super rookie pen tool, the Snipping Tool, Google Maps and Street View are simple ways to plot your route, measure it and put it into action.

A good kit

A hydration pack for long drawings, a comfortable pair of shoes, a phone mount for easy map-following. Stay focused on the picture, don’t get sidetracked by sore feet or dehydration.

Know that plans will change

There will be errors. You’ll run into closed roads and have to go around. A path will be completely rained out. You’ll get punctures. Always expect to have to take an alternate route and you’ll never be surprised!
